In a career that has spanned nearly five decades, Dr. Schatz demonstrates expertise in all areas of immunology and allergy treatment. Known for his work with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, for which he served as President from 2004-2005, Dr. Schatz is highly regarded for his ability to improve the quality of life for his patients. Interested in medicine since the third grade, he chose allergy/immunology as his specialty based on the interesting subject matter and his clinical experience and role models in medical school.

Dr. Schatz earned a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University in 1968 and 1970, respectively. He later earned a Master of Science in epidemiology from Harvard University in 2001. At the inception of his career, Dr. Schatz completed an internship, residency and fellowship at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. His noteworthy roles as a medical doctor have included being chief of the allergy branch at Naval Medical Center of San Diego from 1975-1977 and staff allergist at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center since 1977. He served as chief of the department of allergy at Kaiser Permanente from 2000 to 2011. He has also been a clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, since 1994.

Outside of his work in clinical settings, Dr. Schatz has influenced the medical community through his career-related projects . Since 2012, he has been the editor-in-chief for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice. He has authored more than 330 publications in the fields of allergy and immunology, and he has edited four medical textbooks. Additionally, he was a member of two national panels that wrote guidelines on asthma during pregnancy and was a member of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Expert Panel 3 that wrote the most recent national asthma guidelines. Dr. Schatz is a member of the American Medical Association and a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and the American College of Chest Physicians. In addition, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, as well as the American Board of Internal Medicine.

As a testament to his professional prowess, Dr. Schatz received a Naval Commendation Medal in 1975, and a Distinguished Service Award and Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in 2010 and 2015, respectively. Listed in the fourth edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, he is married with one son. In his spare time, he enjoys exercising and watching sports.
