Faith Wilson LaVelle has been presented with eight Teaching Awards from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago.

With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. LaVelle has been recognized as professor emeritus of the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, since 1987. Prior to her retirement, she was a professor of anatomy with the school from 1985 to 1987, associate professor from 1976 to 1985 and assistant professor from 1970 to 1976 as well as acting department chair from 1984 to 1986. From 1955 to 1970, she was a research associate with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, having been an instructor with the school from 1952 to 1955. Earlier in her career, Dr. LaVelle was an administrative assistant in zoology and instructor of anatomy with the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia from 1948 to 1951. In 1947, she married Arthur LaVelle, also a professional anatomist.

Dr. LaVelle began her career as a student at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1943. She continued her studies with Mount Holyoke College, completing a Master of Arts in zoology in 1945. Dr. LaVelle then joined Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in biology in 1949, doing her thesis research in the Department of Embryology, Carnegie Institution for Science.

A respected voice in her field, Dr. LaVelle has been an active leader in her community as well. A contributor of articles to professional journals, she is a member of the American Association of Anatomists and the Society for Neuroscience. Dr. LaVelle is the former president of the Women's College Board of Chicago and the National Board of Camp Fire Girls Inc., and is a trustee fellow of Mount Holyoke College.

Throughout her career, Dr. LaVelle has been recognized for her contributions. She was the recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the Alumnae Medal of Honor and the 2008 Achievement Award from Mount Holyoke College and the Wohelo Order Award from the Camp Fire Girls Inc. Furthermore, she has been presented with eight Teaching Awards from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago. Dr. LaVelle has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who of American Women.
