Gerald Lawson Gill has been recognized as professor emeritus of James Madison University since 2010.

With more than 35 years of professional experience, Mr. Gill has been recognized as professor emeritus of James Madison University since 2010. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor with the university from 2002 to 2010, an associate professor from 1990 to 2002, an assistant professor from 1980 to 1990, and an instructor from 1974 to 1980. In addition to his primary roles, he served as head of reference and government documents from 2003 to 2010, government documents librarian from 1998 to 2003, and business reference librarian from 1987 to 1999. He was also the reference librarian from 1976 to 1987 and a cataloger from 1974 to 1976.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Gill served on the Faculty Senate of James Madison University from 1975 to 1979, and from 1996 to 1998, as well as the University Council, and as chair and secretary of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee. He has also been a frequent consultant in the field in addition to being a renowned lecturer and speaker to national and regional groups. Civically involved as well, he sat on the board and served as president of the Minor Hill Manorhomes Home Owners Association, having previously sat on the library advisory committee of the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia in the late 1980s.

Mr. Gill began his career as a student at the University of Georgia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history, philosophy and religion in 1971. He continued his studies with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a Master of Arts in library science in 1973. He then joined James Madison University, completing postgraduate coursework in business administration from 1978 to 1979. Mr. Gill is a certified professional librarian in the state of Virginia.

A respected voice in his areas of interest, Mr. Gill has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Library Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Virginia Library Association and the Special Libraries Association. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he is a former member of the editorial board of the James Madison Journal and he was a reviewer for American Reference Books Annual.

Throughout his career, Mr. Gill has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of the Gale Research Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship from the American Library Association in 1991, he cites as a career highlight. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
