Charles Zemach, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Charles Zemach spent the latter portion of his career as a staff member of the fluid dynamics group, theoretical division, at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico between 1989 and 1993.

Retired research physicist Dr. Zemach spent the latter portion of his career as a staff member of the fluid dynamics group, theoretical division, at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico between 1989 and 1993. He formerly spent 13 years as a staff member and deputy division leader in the lab's theoretical division. Prior to his tenure in New Mexico, he held appointments with the United States Department of State and the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in Washington, D.C., and the United States delegation to Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the then Soviet Union. Dr. Zemach also spent 12 years in academia as an assistant, associate and full professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley between 1958 and 1970.

Experiencing several great achievements during his career, Dr. Zemach was most proud to have been involved in helping to draft the SALT I and SALT II agreements between the United States and the then Soviet Union. He was also responsible for developing a theory for the mass ratios of elementary particles. As a result of his research, he has authored multiple articles for various scholarly physics and mathematical journals. Dr. Zemach has contributed much to the drafting of treaties and United States government policy formation as well.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Zemach pursued an education at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1951 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1955. In an effort to remain abreast of developments in his field, he was affiliated with the American Physical Society. For excellence in his career, Dr. Zemach was included in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the West and received fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation early on in his career.

Recently celebrating 60 years of marriage to his wife, Mary Merrill St. John, in 2018, Dr. Zemach is the proud father of three wonderful children. Since retiring, he has focused more of his time on some of his favorite hobbies, including whitewater rafting, kayaking and downhill skiing. He is notably a member and past president of the Adobe Whitewater Club of New Mexico. With a great love of travelling internationally as well, Dr. Zemach impressively completed a solo trip down the Grand Canyon at the age of 67.
