A practiced attorney with decades of experience, Mr. McKechnie excelled as the commissioner for the Central Valley Conference from 1994 to 2017 and is currently active in private legal practice in Merced County, California. Since he established his practice in the mid 1970's, he has represented defendants in criminal cases, with an emphasis on violent crimes, as well as domestic, personal injury and guardianship cases. Additionally, he served as an adjunct professor of law for numerous colleges, including the University of Houston, Merced College and San Diego State University, among others. Prior to founding his private practice, Mr. McKechnie cultivated his skills through work as a contract public defender for San Diego County, with the Office of the Alternate Public Defender and with a separate private practice between 1977 and 1995.

Earlier in his career, Mr. McKechnie gained valuable expertise in reporting and broadcasting through positions with The San Diego Evening Tribune, The Arizona Republic, The Amarillo Globe-News and The Grand Prairie News-Texan, as well as several radio and television stations in Texas and Arizona. He also joined the United States Army in 1961 and worked as cryptologist and as a public information and public affairs officer for six years. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. McKechnie is especially proud of helping to build a hospital in Calexico, California, and a school in Ensenada, California.

A seasoned attorney, Mr. McKechnie holds an ABA degree from Amarillo College in Texas and a Bachelor of Arts from the Goethe Institute in Germany. Going on to earn a Bachelor of Laws, from Western State University College of Law in San Diego and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Thomas Jefferson University in San Diego, he also obtained a Master of Laws from the University of Denver. Mr. McKechnie maintains professional affiliation with the California Public Defenders Association, the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, the Merced County Bar Association and the California and National District Attorneys Associations.

Additionally, Mr. McKechnie has devoted himself to his community through the board of directors of the East County Business Council, and the Lakeside Cityhood Committee, The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego and Merced, as well as the California Legislative Sports Law Committee. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he has contributed to articles in American, South American and European magazines. Mr. McKechnie has been honored many times for his excellence in various fields, including being elected as the President of the Tierrasanta (San Diego) Community Council, and earning 14 national awards for writing and reporting. He has also earned more than 100 service awards, including The Ambassador of Good Will Award for International Humanitarian Service from Lions Club International. He has written more than 16 books on the history and pricing of US Morgan Silver dollars. He has been certified by the courts as an expert in US coinage. His daughter, Amanda is a practicing lawyer and college professor at the University of San Diego.
