Dr. Margaret Ishler Bosse has been recognized as a professor emeritus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls since 2000.

Accruing 44 years of teaching experience to her credit, Dr. Bosse has been recognized as a professor emeritus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls since 2000. She began her teaching career as an English teacher at Bald Eagle Senior High School in Pennsylvania in 1956, remaining in this position for one year before transferring to Marion Central School District in New York State from 1957 through 1959 and York Suburban High School in Pennsylvania from 1959 to 1960. Dr. Bosse then served as an adjunct instructor of English at Pennsylvania State University York Campus from 1962 to 1964 before instructing at York College of Pennsylvania for one year. She then joined the University of Toledo in Ohio as an adjunct English professor from 1966 to 1968 and a graduate assistant in the doctoral program from 1968 to 1971.

Prior to the start of her professional career, Dr. Bosse pursued a formal education at Pennsylvania State University earning a Bachelor of Education in English education in 1956 and a Master of Arts in English in 1961. Following these accomplishments she attended the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, where she obtained a Doctor of Education in 1972. Always knowing that she wanted to be a teacher, Dr. Bosse was inspired by her mother Margaret Fisher Hess who had been a business teacher and her grandmother, Dorothea Hoffmeister, an elementary school teacher.

In the 1970s Dr. Bosse joined the faculty of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, moving up the ranks from assistant professor to full professor between 1972 and 1990. While at Bowling Green she taught curriculum courses, supervised student teachers, then became director of field experiences and national standards compliance. In 1990 she left Ohio and joined the University of Northern Iowa education faculty to teach and chair the Department of Curriculum and Instruction for six years. In 1998 to 1999 she was the acting director of teacher education for the College, then returned to full time teaching until her retirement in 2000.

During her long career Dr. Bosse was active at the local, state, and national levels promoting quality teacher education. She served on the Board of Directors at Wittenberg University in Ohio from 1984 through 1986; the Lutheran Campus Ministry Board in Columbus, Ohio, in 1986 and 1987; and the Lutheran Student Chapel Advisory Board in Bowling Green, Ohio, from 1988 to 1990. In Waterloo Iowa, from 1992 to 1996 she was on the Christian Community Development Board. Also in Iowa in 1994-1995, Dr. Bosse chaired the task force to develop state standards on induction year licensure of beginning teachers for the Iowa Department of Education. On the national level she was on the Board of Examiners of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education from 1983 to 2003. In 1996-1997 she was the national president of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE).

A prolific writer she co-authored four books: Creating the Open Classroom in 1974, Teaching in a Competency-Based Program in 1977; The Dynamics of Effective Teaching with four editions from 1988 to 1992; and the Dynamics of Effective Secondary Teaching. editions 2000 and 2008. In addition, Dr. Bosse has contributed myriad articles to professional journals in her field of teacher education.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Bosse received the Christa McAuliff Showcase for Excellence Award in 1990. Furthermore, she has been selected for inclusion in the seventh edition of Who's Who in America and the 26th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest, as well as in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. Now in retirement, Dr. Bosse resides in Arizona with her husband, the Rev. Dr. Richard C. Bosse. She is the proud mother of two wonderful sons, Frederick and Theodore.
