Now sure of his path, he continued his academic career at Tufts University School of Medicine, where he obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 1971, shortly before he began his internship at St. Elizabeth's. He graduated from Tufts with election to the top medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He then passed the boards for both gastroenterology and internal medicine.
