    SEWANEE, TN, July 04, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Patterson is a professor and dean emeritus who has retired as a Francis S. Houghteling professor of history at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Teaching history for 25 years on campus, he also served the aforementioned university as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences between 1980 and 1991 and as a trustee between 1968 and 1971. Dr. Patterson formerly excelled as a professor of history at Davidson College in North Carolina for 17 years.

During his career, Dr. Patterson has been affiliated with several other institutions. He found success on the international advisory board for the University of Buckingham in England from 1977 to 1993, as the president of the Southern College and University Union and as the organizer of the Associated Colleges of the South in 1988-1989. Writing extensively in his field, he has authored numerous articles for various peer-reviewed journals and has participated on the board of editors for St. Luke's Journal of Theology in Sewanee from 1982 to 1990. Dr. Patterson has also contributed to a dozen books, including Discord, Dialogue and Concord in 1977, Richard Hooker and The Construction of Christian Community in 1997, A Companion to Richard Hooker in 2008, and He is the sole author for four books, King James the Sixth and First and the Reunion of Christianden in 1997; The Liberal Arts at Sewanee: A History of Teaching and Learning at the University of the South in 2009; William Perkins and the Making of a Protestant England in 2014; and Thomas Fuller Discovering England, England's Religious Past in 2018.

A member and former executive committee member of the Episcopal Divinity School Alumni Association, Dr. Patterson is also a member of the American Society of Church History, from which he received an Albert C. Outler Prize for Best Book in Ecumenical Church History in 1999. Furthermore, he is affiliated with the American History Association, the North American Conference on British Studies, the Ecclesiastical History Society of England, the Royal Historical Society of England and the Southern Historian Association, among other professional organizations. Notably, Dr. Patterson has been ordained to the Episcopal Church as a deacon since 1958 and to ministry as a priest since 1959.

Dr. Patterson has previously been awarded a Danforth Foundation graduate fellowship in 1952, research fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1967 and Mellon Appalachian fellowship at the University of Virginia from 1992 to 1993, among others honors. He has been showcased in more than 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World between 1995 and 2016. Likewise, Dr. Patterson was presented with a Doctor of Letters from the University of the South in 2012.

Highly educated, Dr. Patterson initially earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of the South in 1952 and a Master's degree at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. in 1954. He then obtained a Bachelor's degree at Oxford University in 1955, a Master of Divinity at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. in 1958, a Master's degree at Oxford University in 1959, and a Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University in 1966. Dr. Patterson has was awarded a certificate in educational management from Harvard University in 1982.
