Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Valdez pursued an education at Harvard University, earning a History and Science Bachelor of Arts in 1978. Continuing his studies with a Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan in 1980, he subsequently began his career as a health scientist for the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA between 1980 and 1992. Graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy from the Pardee RAND Graduate School for Public Policy Studies in Santa Monica, CA in 1985, he later excelled as an assistant professor, an associate professor and a full professor at the UCLA School of Public Health between 1985 and 2000. Dr. Valdez further contributed to the School of Public Health at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, as the founding dean from 2001 through 2003.
Furthermore, Dr. Valdez has found success as a senior health scientist with the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica and Washington since 1997 and as the executive director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy at the University of New Mexico since 2008. Moreover, he has been active as a senior White House advisor on healthcare reform, the Interagency Health Policy Director for the Healthcare Financing Administration, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and a senior fellow with the Institute for Advanced Policy Solutions at Emory University. Likewise, Dr. Valdez has been involved in a multitude of community service programs through the New Mexico Community Foundation, the Latino Arts Foundation, the National Library of Medicine, AcademyHealth, the Public Health Institute, and the American Hospital Association.
To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Valdez maintains affiliation with numerous professional organizations, including the American Economic Association, the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, the American Public Health Association, the American Society of Hispanic Economists, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, to name a few. As a testament to his success, he has been presented with the Peabody Award in 1995, two Leadership Awards in 1995 and 1996, and the Distinguished Service Award from the United States Public Health Service in 1994, among others. Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Valdez enjoys music, dance and genealogy in his spare time.
