A highly commended orthopedic surgeon and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Schmitz serves as an associate professor with the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and Baylor University. Concurrently, he is a vice chair of the department of orthopedics at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, for whom he also works as the chief of pediatric orthopedic surgery. Additionally, he works as a staff physician for the Pediatric Orthopedic Associates of San Antonio and an invited faculty member of the Miller Orthopedic Review Course. For the past five years, Dr. Schmitz has maintained numerous review positions for professional journals, including the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Prior to obtaining his numerous medical and educational posts, Dr. Schmitz embarked upon his professional journey with the Malcolm Grow Medical Center's department of orthopedic surgery on Andrews Air Force Base, where he found success as a staff orthopedic surgeon from 2009 until 2011. Subsequently, he gained valuable expertise through his efforts with the Craig Joint Theater Hospital, the San Antonio Military Medical Center and the U.S. Air Force Academy Rugby Affinity Group. He has also served on the editorial boards of Pocket Orthopedica and the World Journal of Orthopedics. Dr. Schmitz earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2000 and a Doctor of Medicine from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago in 2004, after which he pursued an orthopedic surgery residency through San Antonio Uniformed Services in 2009. Upon completion, he received his certification to conduct pediatric and general orthopedic surgery. Dr. Schmitz maintains his membership with the International Society of Dip Arthroscopy, the American Orthopedic Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine, which he founded in 2014.
In light of his outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Schmitz has been permitted to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program of the American Orthopedic Association and the Leadership Fellows Program of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Additionally, he was presented with the Lena Sefton Clark Pediatric Fellowship Award from Rady Children's Hospital San Diego for Outstanding Work in 2012, a Rising Star Award through Texas Monthly Super Doctor's in 2017 and 2018, and the U.S. Army Order of Military Medical Merit in 2019. A firm advocate for resilience in one's trade, Dr. Schmitz aspires to soon retire from the military and join an academic practice in the near future.
