With nearly 65 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Grossberg has been the Walter Schroeder professor emeritus microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. Before accepting this post, he was with the academic institution as a professor of medicine from 1973 to 2009, as Walter Schroeder professor of microbiology from 1983 to 2009 and director of the medical scientist MD-PhD training program from 1992 to 2000. At the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University School of Medicine, he acted as professor of microbiology from 1966 to 2009 and chairman of the microbiology department from 1966 to 1997.
Dr. Grossberg has worked as the deputy director of the Cancer Center of the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1984 to 1996. Previously excelling as the visiting professor of oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1988 to 1989, he served the Pasteur Institute as a visiting scientist of microbial physiology from 1964 to 1965 and viral oncology from 1974 to 1975. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of assistant professor of microbiology for Cornell University Medical College from 1962 to 1966 and the Medical School for the University of Minnesota from 1959 to 1962. He began his career as a resident in medicine at Duke University Hospital from 1954 to 1955 and from 1957 until 1958, at which point he became a fellow in medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, MD for one year.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Grossberg pursued an education at Emory University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1951. He concluded his studies at Emory University in 1954, graduating from the School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine. Following these accomplishments, he completed service in the United States Army as a first lieutenant in Korea, and then rose to the rank of captain in the United States Medical Corps in Japan between 1956 and 1957.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Grossberg has held the role of consultant for the World Health Organization from 1978 to 2004, the National Institutes of Health from 1973 to 1990, the American Cancer Society from 1988 to 1992, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1977. Most recently, he served as consultant for Promega Corporation in 2008 and Agennix from 2006 to 2008. Other consultant work brought him to Canada, Argentina, Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland. He has furthermore excelled as an expert witness for Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP and Pennie & Edmonds.
Dr. Grossberg found success with his creative works as well, having contributed to the editorial boards of the Research in Virology Journal and the Future Virology Journal. He has written 192 publications and acted as a reviewer for 22 scientific journals. He held the roles of founder for the Friends of the Fine Arts Quartet in Milwaukee, WI, since 2014 and board director for the Friends of Music with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1980 to 1986.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Grossberg remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was an honorary member of the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research in 2009. He also was secretary-treasurer of the American Society of Virology from 1984 to 2006, president of the Association of Medical School Microbiology and Immunology Chairs (AMSMIC) from 1993 to 1994, and a fellow of IDSA. Other memberships included with the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the American Association of Immunologists, the American Association for Cancer Research, the Microbiology Society of Great Britain, and the French Society of Microbiology.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Grossberg has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He has received fellowships from the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a senior fellowship from the European Molecular Biology Organization in 1974. He was presented with a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health in 1961, a Distinguished Service Award from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1988, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Virology in 2006. Moreover, he has previously been included in multiple editions of Who's Who in America.
Dr. Grossberg was also designated an American Cancer Society Scholar in 1989, a John and Mary R. Markle Scholar in 1965 and accepted a fellowship from the National Institutes of Health in 1959. He has further obtained a number of patents in his field. He was the first to isolate the Pandemic Asian Influenza H2N2 Virus in 1957, which was later used as the vaccine in the United States. He was eponymously honored with the annual Sidney E. Grossberg Lectureship by the American Society for Virology in 2002 and the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1998.
