During 36 years of educational experience, Dr. Archibald served as a professor of biology at Slippery Rock State University of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1994. Concurrently, she acted as Director of Academic Grants from 1986 to 1994. She also was secretary for the Marine Science Consortium for Pennsylvania State Schools in 1979 and co-director in 1988. In 1980-1982 she was a program director for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. Prof. Archibald began her career in science education in 1953 in the Elkhart Senior High School in Elkhart, Indiana.

Dr. Archibald has published articles in The American Journal of Phycology, The British Journal of Phycology and Phycologie, among others. A chapter on soil algae appeared in the reference Soil Biology Guide. She has participated in and organized numerous international seminars on soil algae and frequently presented papers at annual scientific society meetings. Prof. Archibald is a member of the science honorary Sigma Xi.

Recognition of Prof. Archibald's work includes: Fullbright Teaching Exchange to England in 1962; an IREX grant to then Czechoslovakia in 1977; a National Academy of Science Research Exchange to the USSR in 1978 (Leningrad and Tashkent); a Bronze Medal of Achievement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1982; and selection as a team member of a New York Botanical Garden Expedition to the Brazilian rain forest in 1984.

Prior to embarking on her professional path, Dr. Archibald obtained a formal education at Ball State University in Muncie, IN, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1953 and a Master of Arts in 1961. She went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in botany from the University of Texas-Austin in 1969. Dr. Archibald grew up with a family of teachers and always liked the subject of biology. In her generation, a woman usually taught or went into nursing. People in her generation had a chance to see women start to enter more diverse areas during World War II. She had both a female biology teacher and chemistry teacher whom she respected and admired.
