After graduating from Wabash Valley Junior College with an Associate of Science in 1973, Ms. Pixley enlisted in the United States Army as a private in 1974. She further found success with the United States Army Nurse Corps, serving as a staff nurse, a first lieutenant, a captain, a major and a lieutenant colonel until 1995. During this time, she continued her studies at Murray State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1976. Soon thereafter, Ms. Pixley concluded her academic efforts with a Master of Science in nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1982.
From 1979 to 1981, Ms. Pixley excelled as a staff nurse with the Ireland Army Community Hospital in Fort Knox, KY, before accepting the post of a nurse counselor with the 4th Recruiting Brigade for the Saint Louis Recruiting Battalion in Saint Louis, MO, between 1983 and 1985. After briefly working as a staff nurse and an assistant head nurse with the 121 EVAC Hospital in Seoul, Korea from 1985 to 1986, she returned to the United States and contributed to the Academy of Health Sciences in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX from 1986 to 1989. Furthermore, she found success as a clinical head nurse, an instructor of nursing education and staff development, the director of a critical care for a nursing course, a float nurse, and a per diem emergency room nurse. Furthermore, Ms. Pixley remained active as a critical care emergency room nurse for the Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro, TN from 2001 until her retirement in 2015.
An expert in the field, Ms. Pixley co-wrote, "Introductory Nursing Care of Adults, 2nd Edition" in 2000. A testament to her success, she is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit Military Medical Service Award. A member of the American Nurses Association, she is additionally affiliated with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Emergency Nurses Association, thd Tennessee Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Chi, Phi Theta Kappa and the Murray State University Honor Society in Nursing. In addition to her college education, Ms. Pixley is certified as a sexual assault examiner.
