Dr. Gopen earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from Brandeis University in 1967, which included a year at the University of Reading in England. He followed that by simultaneously earning both a JD from the Harvard Law School in 1972 and a PhD in English and American Language and Literature in 1975 from the Harvard University Graduates School of Arts and Sciences. He taught in the English department at Harvard for five years while perusing his PhD. His first assistant professorship was in the English Department at the University of Utah from 1975 to 1978.
