n adjunct professor of chemistry at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY since 2006, Dr. Maung S. Htoo has been teaching at the academic level for more than 50 years.

An adjunct professor of chemistry at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY since 2006, Dr. Htoo has been teaching at the academic level for more than 50 years. First hired as an adjunct professor of chemistry and physical science at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie in 1966, he taught at the college until 2005. He simultaneously taught chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1992 to 1997 and at the State University of New York at New Paltz from 1998 to 2006 before accepting his position at Marist College.

Dr. Htoo began as a research chemist for the International Paper Company in Glens Falls, NY in 1954. He later accepted a position with IBM in Poughkeepsie in 1961, where he remained for another 31 years until 1992. While working at IBM, he took on the roles of senior technical staff member and manager for the Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical Analysis Laboratories between 1984 and 1991.

Dr. Htoo has long served as the director of the Dutchess County Regional Science Fair since 1989, the first science fair in New York State that originated in 1959 during the Sputnik era. During his career, Dr. Htoo organized and chaired the International Photopolymer Conferences between 1967 and 1991 and was president of the Technical Communications International Company between 1992 and 1995. Dr. Htoo edited the "Microelectronic Polymers" book in 1989, written by internationally known scientists from Bell Labs, Chiba University, Japan; Hitachi Corporation, Japan; Fujitsu Corporation, Japan; Intel Corporation, U.S., Philips Corporation, Netherlands; and Hewlett Packard Company, U.S. He holds several patents and publications on photopolymers and semiconductors between 1967 and 1990. He was guest editor for "Polymer Engineering and Science" journals numerous times between 1972 and 1993.

Dr. Htoo has maintained multiple memberships in his field throughout his career. He was elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, he is a distinguished member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and a longtime member of the New York Academy of Sciences, a senior member of the American Chemical Society, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. Dr. Htoo is currently the vice president of the LaGrange Library in LaGrange, NY, secretary-treasurer of the Vassar College chapter of Sigma Xi, and Chairman of the Town of LaGrange Conservation Advisory Council. In 2007, he was a recipient of the prestigious Margery Sachs Award for lifetime dedication to the Environment. Since 1992, Dr. Htoo has served as the president of the Vassar Brothers Institute in Poughkeepsie, NY, a non-profit organization that was established in 1882 and is devoted to furthering the study of science, literature and art.

Honored multiple times for his accomplishments, Dr. Htoo received a Certificate of Special U.S. Congressional Recognition for Outstanding and Invaluable Service to the Community in 2016. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama for Lifelong Commitment to Building a Stronger Nation through Volunteer Service in 2015. In that same year, the New York State Senate awarded Dr. Htoo the New York State Senate Liberty Award, the state's highest honor, which is presented to citizens who have merited special commendation for their actions on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers and their community. Furthermore, he received a State of New York Legislative Resolution for his achievements in the field of academia and commitment to improve the community through volunteerism and education at the Assembly Chambers in Albany, NY. In 2013, Dr. Htoo received a 300MM IBM Semiconductor Award for Contributions to IBM and Dedication to Inspire Future STEM Generations. Notably, he had been cited in the 58th edition of Who's Who in America.

Dr. Htoo first studied electrical engineering at the University of Yangon in Myanmar (Burma) and came to the United States soon thereafter in 1949 to study how to make paper from bamboo. He completed a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in chemical engineering at the University of Maine in 1952 and 1954, respectively. He also received a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1961. Born in Yenangyaung, Myanmar, Dr. Htoo later married Loretta Anne Htoo, a native of New Hampshire who graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1950. He has four children, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
