Gladys Rice Washburn, Writer, Photographer, Filmmaker and Educator, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

NEW YORK, NY, October 11, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Gladys Rice Washburn with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Washburn celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

In 1939, at the age of twelve, Gladys Rice won the two top awards in an adult photo contest, and one of the photographs was published in The New York Times with her first credit line. At age fifteen, she was the photographer for a small garden magazine, handling assignments after school hours and processing the work at her father's photo studio. While she was still in her teens, one of her pictorial photographs was included in the exhibit, "Photography as Art," at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

After graduating from high school with a diploma in fine and applied art, she was hired by Conde Nast Publications to do still life photography for Vogue, Glamour and their other magazines. When her father retired in 1950, she took over the management of his studio. She taught at the Germain School of Photography for six years.

Ms. Washburn's first solo show was multi-media, at the Hunter Arts Gallery. Others followed. In the early-1960s, she produced a few films, including an art film that won CINE's Golden Eagle Award in 1965 and was shown at the Tours Film Festival in France. Her film, The Swing, was a popular success. Ms. Washburn considers it to be her major artistic accomplishment. In 1974, she became the president of Washburn Films, an educational film distribution company.

In 1976, she was a writer-in-residence at Lexington for the Performing Arts. A Summa Cum Laude graduate from the City University of New York, she earned a Master's Degree in English Education from New York University in 1981. She taught expository writing at NYU's Writing Center, and from the 1980s to 2001 taught writing and speech communication courses at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

In 2004, Bronxville Public Library mounted a retrospective exhibit of her photographic work. She has had three books published which she designed, including a collection of her short stories and one of her poetry. Recently she completed work on an illustrated, nonfictional narrative entitled A Wild Parade.

Gladys Rice Washburn attributes her success to her parents, who encouraged her to pursue her interest in the arts and to her persistence. As a testament to that success, she has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women.
