Retired as a physicist with more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Johnson worked as a consultant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge Tennessee (1966) and then as a staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, until 2015. During his tenure, he had the opportunity to work in the many aspects of high energy physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics. He formerly worked as a research associate at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York (1970-1972). Additionally, Dr. Johnson was a visiting professor of physics at State University of New York at Stony Brook (1981/82) and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (1997/98), and worked for several months with the theory group at the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Physics in Villigen, Switzerland (1977). Prior to embarking upon his professional path, he received an undergraduate degree at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1966), where he was a co-op student at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Johnson concluded his academic efforts at Carnegie Mellon University, obtaining a master's degree (1968) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1970). During this time, he worked for six months as a consultant at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica California. He completed the last year of his Ph. D while a visitor at the Center for Nuclear Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
An associate editor for Nuclear Physics from 1975 to 1997, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Elsevier, Dr. Johnson also served as editor for several books, including "Relativistic Dynamics and Quark-Nuclear Physics" (1986) and "Nuclear and Particle Physics on the Light Cone" (1989).
An elected fellow of the American Physical Society, Dr. Johnson was presented with a Humboldt Award for a Senior U.S. Scientist from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1986 and became a Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellow in 1991. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Johnson has been featured in approximately 25 editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
