Dr. Lathrop is a noted nuclear scientist and a former professor of applied research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center at Stanford University. Obtaining emeritus status in 1994, he has since served in retirement as an administrative law judge on the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for six years. Prior to these esteemed appointments, Dr. Lathrop excelled with the Los Alamos Science Laboratory in a myriad of positions, including as an associate director for engineering sciences, a division leader of computer science and services, an alternate division leader of energy, an associate division leader of reactor safeguards and reactor safety and technology, an assistant division leader of theoretical, and a group leader of transport theory. At the inception of his career in 1962, he flourished at the Laboratory as a staff member, having thereafter worked at the General Atomic Co. in San Diego as a group leader of methods development for one year.

Drawing upon a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the California Institute of Technology, Dr. Lathrop has served on numerous advisory boards, committees and panels throughout his career. A former visiting professor at the University of New Mexico and guest lecturer at the International Atomic Energy Agency, he previously sat on the advisory committee of reactor physics at the Energy Research and Development Administration, the reactor physics visiting committee of the Argonne National Laboratory, the management advisory committee of the Union Carbide Corp., and the engineering national advisory committee of the University of Michigan, among many others. Dr. Lathrop is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, with whom he maintained activity as the chairman in 1994.

The author of many reports, papers and chapters to books, Dr. Lathrop was a member of the editorial advisory board of Progress in Nuclear Energy from 1983 to 1985. He is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society, where he also acted as the chairman of the mathematics and computation division and as national director and treasurer. Also, The American Nuclear Society honored Dr. Lathrop with an Outstanding Performance Award in 1980.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Lathrop was named a special fellow of the Atomic Energy Commission and of the R.C. Baker Foundation. He earned the Distinguished Service Award from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1984 and received the E.O. Lawrence Memorial Award from the Energy Research and Development Administration in 1976, in recognition for outstanding contributions in solving the neutron transport equation. Married to Judith Green for over 60 years, Dr. Lathrop is the proud father of two children, as well as a grandfather of two.
