Accumulating more than 25 years of professional excellence in the medical field, Dr. Oates is a renowned rheumatologist who has been affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston since 1997. Currently a professor and director of the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, his academic focus includes the role of reactive intermediates in lupus nephritis, the role of endothelial dysfunction in lupus nephritis and biomarkers of atherosclerosis and glomerulonephritis in lupus. Dr. Oates also the vice chair for research in the Department of Medicine. he is affiliated with the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston as the former chief of rheumatology.

The MUSC Division of Rheumatology and Immunology is nationally recognized for excellence in patient care, innovative research and outstanding training focused on the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. In 2019, the MUSC Health rheumatology team was notably ranked 13th in the U.S. News & World Report list of best rheumatology programs. This auspiciously placed it in the top 1% of programs nationwide.

As a faculty member at MUSC, Dr. Oates has maintained a translational research laboratory and developed a clinical research program as a member of the Medical University of South Carolina Lupus Erythematosus (MUSCLE) clinical research group. He has also conducted multiple investigator initiated clinical studies and commercial clinical trials. In more recent years, he and his team have been focusing their research on using medical records and census data to help predict which patients might need the most assistance in managing their health care. As a result of his research, Dr. Oates has been widely published, having contributed more than 25 scholarly articles to scholarly journals, more than 70 original manuscripts and several book chapters, reviews and editorials. He is currently a member of the editorial board for the American Journal and Medical Sciences.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Oates pursued an education at Bates College, where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1986 as a Dana scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa. He later attained a Doctor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 1991 as a Four Schools Physician Scientist Training scholar. It was during his studies at Johns Hopkins that Dr. Oates notably met Dr. Mary Betty Stevens and was first introduced to rheumatology.

Dr. Oates' further pursued his studies with an internship and residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center and fellowship in rheumatology at both Duke University Medical Center and the Medical University of South Carolina. He was also a Medical University of South Carolina Health Sciences Foundation Developing Scholar in 2003. Dr. Oates is board certified in rheumatology and internal medicine and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of South Carolina. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Clinical and Climatological Association, the Henry Kunkel Society, the American College of Rheumatology and the Nitric Oxide Society. Dr. Oates is a past president of the American Federation for Medical Research and the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation.

In recognition of his achievements in his field, Dr. Oates received numerous accolades. Among them were an Arthritis Investigator Award from the Arthritis Foundation from 2001 to 2004, the Merck Young Investigator Award in 2002, an Associate Investigator Award from the Department of Veteran Affairs between 1997 and 2000 and an International Exchange Award from the Research Education Foundation/European League Against Rheumatism in 2003. Named to Best Doctors in America by Best Doctors, Inc. in 2007 and to American's Top Physicians by Consumer's Research Council of America in 2007, Dr. Oates is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
