MADISON, WI, November 28, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mary Haywood Metz with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Metz celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Professor Metz earned a Bachelor of Arts in social relations (Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology) from Radcliffe College in 1960. In 1960-61 she was a German Academic Exchange Commission Fellow studying psychology and political science in Freiburg and West Berlin. She then pursued graduate study in sociology at the University of California at Berkeley, receiving her Master of Arts in 1966 and her doctorate in 1971.

She was an assistant professor of sociology at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana from 1970 to 1976. After a move to Milwaukee with her husband and two small sons, between 1976 and 1979 she held positions as a lecturer in sociology at Mount Mary College and at Marquette University, and as principal investigator on a grant from the National Institute of Education.

Professor Metz was appointed Assistant Professor of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1979. She moved through the ranks in that position, retiring as Professor Emerita of Educational Policy Studies in 2007. She twice served as Chair of the department, in 1991-1994 and 2003-2005.

Her body of research and publication in the sociology of education is based on a series of qualitative research studies. She is best known for her two books, Classrooms and Corridors, concerning authority in middle schools, and Different by Design which examines magnet schools' challenges in establishing truly distinctive educational patterns within the constraints of the wider public school district. The best known of her shorter works is "Real School: A Universal Drama Amid Disparate Experience." It explores tensions between standardized secondary school structures and the daily social and curricular experiences of teachers and students shaped by the social class of their surrounding community.

Professor Metz is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and received the University of Wisconsin School of Education Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in 2006. She was also honored as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Kent Fellow.
