FAIR OAKS, CA, December 07, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Drawing on an extremely impressive career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Spensley is a highly experienced Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Spensley began his journey to becoming a doctor at the University of Michigan, where he received his Medical Doctorate in 1963. This was followed by a rotating internship at Denver General Hospital. Subsequently, Dr. Spensley embarked on a Residency at the University of Colorado, before beginning his professional career.
In 1964, Dr. Spensley was drafted following his internship at Denver General Hospital. He was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood where he functioned as an OJT Psychiatrist running the inpatient Psychiatry & Neurology inpatient ward and the outpatient psychiatric and neurology clinic. Following active duty, he was a psychiatric resident at Colorado Psychiatric from 1966-1969 and continued to serve in the army and then the navy reserve.
Following his military service, Dr. Spensley began what would become a long tenure at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine. He started teaching as a faculty member before becoming an associate professor, and later an associate clinical professor. Dr. Spensley has additionally taught as an adjunct professor at the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, as well as being a consultant to Westminster Counseling. He also served on a marriage tribunal from 1980 to 1995.
Dr. Spensley has contributed a number of articles and research papers to medical journals during his career, including 'Doxepin: A Useful Adjunct in the Treatment of Heroin Addicts in a Methadone Program' which was published in the International Journal of the Addictions, 'The adolescent transvestite on a psychiatric service: Family patterns' which was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, and 'The Support Group in Psychiatric Residency: How Can We Best Help Our Residents?' published in the Journal of Psychiatric Education.
Dr. Spensley is a member of a number of professional associations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the California Medical Association. He has received many honors during the course of his career, including the Distinguished Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award, and was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Spensley is also affiliated with organizations such as the Central California Psychiatric Society, the California Medical Association, and Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Honor Society.
When not working, Dr. Spensley enjoys spending time with his wife, his four children and his nine grandchildren, as well as playing tennis, skiing, and woodworking. Dr. Spensley has been a supporter of Habitat for Humanity for several years, is a supporting member of both Physicians for Social Responsibility and Bread for the World, and for many years was active with Catholic Community Services of Sacramento, California.
