A native of Almeria, Spain, Dr. Martinez-Carrion arrived to the United States in 1957. A short time later, he enrolled at the University of California Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. After becoming a naturalized citizen in 1961, Dr. Martinez-Carrion continued his academic efforts with the aforementioned university, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1964.

Subsequent the completion of his doctorate, Dr. Martinez-Carrion served as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow with the University of Rome from 1964 to 1965. Furthermore, he found success at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where he held the positions of an assistant professor and a professor between 1965 and 1977. Soon thereafter, he accepted the position of a chairman with the Virginia Commonwealth University for nine years until his departure in 1986. Dr. Martinez-Carrion worked as the dean for the School of Biological Sciences with the University of Missouri, Kansas City since 1986, and has been recognized as professor emeritus of the university since 2003.

In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Martinez-Carrion was associated with the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology as the director of the Institute of Biotechnology in Herndon, between 1984 and 1986. From 1977 to 1982, he contributed as the chairman of the Biophysics Study Section with the National Institutes of Health and grant review panel for molecular neurobiology program of the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. and as a panelist for the postdoctoral fellowships at Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1995. Utilizing his expertise in biochemistry, Dr. Martinez-Carrion has authored numerous articles for related professional journals and was a member of the editorial board for the Journals of Biological Chemistry, Protein Chemistry and Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

For his notable achievements in the field, Dr. Martinez-Carrion has been the recipient of a research career award and research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the American Heart Association. He maintains an affiliation with the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Panamerican Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the International Society for Neurochemistry, and the Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, among others. Furthermore, Dr. Martinez-Carrion was elected fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences.
