Prior to these roles, he was the director of the Division of Pain Management at Loyola University Health Systems from 2005 to 2008, the director of acute pain management at the Northwestern University Medical Center from 2001 to 2005, and the program director of anesthesiology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago from 1997 to 2001. Earlier in his career, Dr. Candido worked as an associate member of anesthesiology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City from 1989 to 1997. In addition to his primary profession, he has maintained activity as a professor of clinical anesthesiology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and has been the chair of the Veterans Affairs Initiative since 2016.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Candido pursued formal education at the University del Noreste in Mexico, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1983. From there, he completed a residency in anesthesiology at the New York Medical College Metropolitan Hospital Center and the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Subsequently, Dr. Candido completed a fellowship in pain management at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago prior to commencing his professional career.
A contributor of myriad articles to professional publications, Dr. Candido is a certified pain management specialist through the American Board of Anesthesiology, where he is also a diplomate. He has conducted research in the effects of buprenorphine on prolonging pain relief from local anesthetic injections. An associate fellow of the Institute of Medicine in Chicago, he has earned several accolades in recognition of his renown in the industry. He earned the Top Doctor Award in 2016 and has been the recipient of numerous awards from the Association of University Anesthesiologists since 2008. Likewise, the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago named Dr. Candido as their Researcher of the Year from 1988 to 1989 and Cook County Hospital named him Educator of the Year from 2000 to 2001. Furthermore, he has been recognized by the Northwestern University Department of Anesthesiology in 2003.
A leading light in his industry, Dr. Candido has been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
