Joyce Ann Gaetano is the first female chemical engineer to have been hired by the Bayer Corporation, and is the recipient of several awards for innovation and leadership.

Ms. Gaetano is renowned as a retired chemical engineer with a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years. She credits her private Catholic school education with affording her the opportunity to take a wide range of classes with teachers who encouraged her to pursue her passions. With the support of her high school chemistry teacher, Ms. Gaetano pursued an education at the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, graduating in 1978 with honors.

From 1976 to 1978, Ms. Gaetano completed chemical engineering apprenticeships with the United States Army Corps of Engineers dam water analysis team and Westinghouse Corporation's nuclear research and development department. In 1979, she began her career as a technical product representative for the Mobay Corporation, a subsidiary of Bayer, eventually ascending to the posts of a product manager in 1981 and a technical marketing specialist for reaction injection molding products from 1983 to 1985. Ms. Gaetano later worked as supervisor of specialty transportation polymers for Bayer Material Science from 1986 to 1992.

Ms. Gaetano transitioned to a management role in new markets development for Bayer Corporation in 1993, and found success as the company's elastomer textile backings marketing manager from 1995 to 2000. She subsequently excelled with the Bayer Corporation as the froth sheet foam business manager from 2000 to 2002 and the industry manager of raw materials from 2002 to 2003, at which point she entered a well-deserved retirement. Likewise, she has delivered white papers at symposia and contributed numerous articles to professional publications, including Chemical Week, Modern Plastics and Chemical Engineering News. Ms. Gaetano's work primarily consists of research, analysis, and business development of novel polyurethanes, polymers, and plastics, with a focus on new market applications.

Ms. Gaetano is proud to have made headway for other women in her industry throughout her career. She is the first female chemical engineer to have been hired by the Bayer Corporation, and is the recipient of several awards for innovation and leadership during her time with the company. In 1979, she was designated as the first female committee chair for the Society of the Plastics Industry, an accomplishment she considers a career highlight. Currently, Ms. Gaetano is active in progressive politics and community youth mentoring programs and remains passionate about creating opportunities for female business leaders.
