Dr. Kirkland is renowned as a pediatric endocrinologist with more than 50 years of distinguished service to her credit. The child of a thoracic surgeon, she fostered an early interest in a career in medicine, and eventually gravitated to pediatric endocrinology because it was an honor to make a difference in the lives of young patients. She initially pursued an education at Duke University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1964 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1968. Dr. Kirkland earned a Master of Public Health at the University of Texas in 1990.

From 1968 to 1970, Dr. Kirkland completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. She began her career as a registrar at Guy's Hospital at the Hospital for Sick Children, London, in 1970, before returning to the aforementioned college for an additional residency in pediatric endocrinology from 1971 to 1973. Dr. Kirkland subsequently worked with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia from 1973 to 1974, where she participated in a fellowship from 1974 to 1975.

Dr. Kirkland later found much success at the Baylor College of Medicine, holding the position of an assistant professor of pediatrics from 1975 to 1981, an associate professor of pediatrics from 1981 to 1988 and a professor of pediatrics since 1988. She additionally contributed to Baylor as the senior associate dean of medical education between 2000 and 2006. Moreover, she has been active with the Texas Children's Hospital as a staff member since 1975 and the director of the Junior League Outpatient Department and Ambulatory Services since 1984. Dr. Kirkland is proud to have been among the first practitioners in the United States to use human growth hormone therapies in treating patients with pituitary deficiencies. Dr. Kirkland is a frequent author of articles and reviews published in professional journals. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her contributions to endocrinology. Dr. Kirkland is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Endocrine Society.

Dr. Kirkland, who received the B'nai B'rith Heart Humanitarian Award for community service in 1986, was a district director for Community Access to Child Health, a program sponsored by the Texas Pediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics and designed to improve all children's access to health care. She received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Baylor Medical Alumni Association in April 2000. Dr. Kirkland received The Arnold J. Rudolph Baylor Pediatric Award for Lifetime Excellence in Teaching in October, 2004. She was selected for the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education, May 2005. She has served as President of the Southern Society for Pediatric Research.

Dr. Kirkland was a member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Alumni Association of the Duke University School of Medicine for seven years and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Duke Medical Alumni Association in 1992. She was elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees In 1995 and was vice-chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and chaired the Human Resources Committee. She served on the Medical Center Affairs Committee and the Duke University Health System Board of Directors. She chaired the Board's Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Committee for ten years and established the Patient and Family Advisory Council on which she continues as an Honorary member. She is member of the Duke Women's Impact Network Council (WIN) to support women's leadership skills and efforts, 2019-2022. Dr. Kirkland was awarded The University Medal for Distinguished and Meritorious Service at Duke in 2012.
