Robert B. Couch, MD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Fields of Medicine and Medical Education

    GALVESTON, TX, February 06, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert B. Couch, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Inspired by his father, a physician, Dr. Couch chose to pursue a similar career path. Today, he channels a career's worth of knowledge into his work as an adjunct professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Over the course of more than 40 years, he has worked as a professor of molecular virology, microbiology and medicine, as the director of the Influenza Research Center, the director of the Acute Respiratory Diseases Unit, the director of the Respiratory Pathogens Research Unit, the Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and the head of the Infectious Diseases Section of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. During the late 1950s and mid-1960s he gained valuable experience in medicine and medical research as a senior surgeon in the U.S Public Health Service conducting clinical research and serving as head of a Clinical Virology section at the National Institutes of Health. He has also served in many advisory roles to government and non-government organizations such as Chairman of the American Delegation for acute respiratory disease research of the U.S. - Japan Research Program.

A diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Couch earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, where he later completed an internship and two residencies, one as the Vanderbilt Hospital Chief resident physician. To remain aware of changes in the field, he affiliated with the American College of Physicians, The American Society of Clinical Investigation, The American Association of Physicians, The Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Federation of Clinical Research, The Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine, The American Society of Epidemiology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science just to name a few. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Couch contributed to many articles in professional journals including articles on development and application of Influenza vaccines that include: "Safety and Immunogenicity of a high dosage trivalent influenza vaccine among elderly subjects", Antibody correlates and predictors of immunity to naturally occurring influenza in humans and the importance of antibody to the neuraminidase" and "In Vivo correlates of immunogenicity of inactivated influenza A H5, H7, and H9 vaccines in humans".

In recognition of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Couch received the Dr. Charles Merieux Award through the Foundation for Infectious Diseases in 2011, as well as the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime achievement Award and several features in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Dr. Couch continues parlaying the vast knowledge he has gained over the years to colleagues at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
