Mr. Alvine is a recognized global business executive who began his career with Signal Corps, where he held a top-secret security clearance for his assignment during the Cuban missile crisis. In 1960, he was hired by the Celanese Corporation, for which he contributed during the next 17 years before joining Uniroyal Tire Company as the Corporate Senior Vice President, President and Chief Executive Officer of its billion-dollar engineered products and services group. During his tenure, Mr. Alvine oversaw 32,000 employees and, in 1985, was a leader responsible for the largest management led leveraged buyout in the history of the world of Uniroyal Corporation Worldwide.
Mr. Alvine retired from Uniroyal in 1987, having reached the position of Corporate Executive Vice President, Chief Executive Officer and President of engineered products and services worldwide. For the past three decades, he has led several private equity and venture capital firms, including I-Ten Management Corp., and Ten Capital Corporation as its founder, owner, chairman and chief executive officer. Mr. Alvine is also the owner of several businesses with his son Robert James, including Premier Subaru since 2000 and Premier KIA LLC since 2011, and Global Automotive Reins, LLC, since 2005.
Acknowledged internationally for his extraordinary success in business growth, acquisitions and shareholder monetization from private equity and venture capital investments, Mr. Alvine has also provided his expertise by serving in close to 30 board director roles throughout his career and by serving as a board chairman of numerous for-profit, nonprofit, and civic organizations. He is a former board chairman of the National Theater of the Deaf, and has served on the board of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York and the Naval War College Foundation. Furthermore, Mr. Alvine maintained activity on the advisory board and arts and sciences council for the dean's cabinet at his alma mater, Rutgers University.
Since 1994, Mr. Alvine has been a member of the board of trustees of the Long Warf Theater. He is also currently on the board of the Jackson Laboratory, where he is a life trustee and chairman emeritus. Involved in the lab's restructuring, transformation and growth, it is notably one of the most advanced laboratories in the world for research on genetics and genomics. Additionally, Mr. Alvine is a distinguished panel reviewer for the National Technology Center, United States Missile Defense Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, since 2009.
One of Mr. Alvine's greatest achievements was the time he spent with the University of New Haven between 1997 and 2008. Elected to the university's board of governors, where he served as the chairman for six years, he led the task force that began the transformation from a commuter college to a residential university. He is recognized for being instrumental in saving and the turnaround of the university from near bankruptcy to new growth. Mr. Alvine helped oversee the construction of new residence halls, the development of a $15.5 million student fitness center and the creation of an $11.5 million cutting-edge facility to house the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, where he led the official creation of the Henry Lee Institute for Forensic Sciences and served as its first Board Chair.
In addition to dedicating many hours to the university, Mr. Alvine has also been a generous benefactor. He created a professional enrichment program, which encompasses the entire campus, including athletics, and brings well-known leaders of various fields to campus to meet with students. He also contributed annually to the Chargers Classic, helped create "smart" classrooms, established an endowed scholarship and has been known for supporting the Lee Institute and the Peterson Library. Honored several times by the University of New Hampshire for his contributions, Mr. Alvine was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame with the Alumni Award of Excellence in recognition for his many years of philanthropy and leadership on campus and throughout the Greater New Haven community. In 2000, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the university and in 2015 was honored with the President's Award.
Early in his career, he was responsible for the development of an innovative application of an engineered plastic to replace metal in various applications, Mr. Alvine also created and developed the largest single application for high densely polyethylene worldwide. Some of his other renowned work included devising the select process and innovation of replacing glass bottles that deliver milk and replacing the paper that milk could be bought in with plastic. Employed as the general manager of business at Celanese Corporation at the time, Mr. Alvine notably received an award from the plastic industry for being the "father of the plastic milk bottle."
Highly educated, Mr. Alvine first acquired a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and chemical engineering with a minor in physics and biology at Rutgers University in 1960. He then achieved an executive master's degree at Harvard Business School in 1972 and a Doctor of Humane Letters at the University of New Haven, with summa cum laude honors, in 2000. He holds a certificate affidavit in high polymer and sales engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology, in business accounting and statistics from Rutgers University, in strategic asset management from Boston University, in strategy execution and new multinational from Columbia University and in marketing and sales management from Syracuse University. Mr. Alvine was also a certified code breaker in cryptography through the U.S. Signal Corporation.
Among countless other professional organizations, Mr. Alvine is a member of the National Association of Corporate Growth, the National Planning Institute, the World Affairs Council, the American Institute of Management and the Audit Institute International. A U.S. veteran who served in active duty during the Cuban missile crisis between 1962 and 1963, he is also active as a member of the International AMVETS Veterans Service Foundation, the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, the United States Veterans Association and The American Legion, and is a founding member of the National Museum of the United States Army and the Ellis Island Foundation, among many others.
Mr. Alvine received several honors for his philanthropy work and business accomplishments, including an Award for Outstanding Philanthropist from the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2013 for his exceptional generosity. He also received a State of Connecticut Citizen of Year Award for the years of 2011 and 2012, was named as a Kentucky Colonel by the Government of Kentucky in 1976 and was showcased in several professional publications such as the American Registry of Outstanding Professionals.
