A respected psychiatrist in his field, Dr. Haney received a Doctor of Medicine from Yale University in 1964 and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Yale University in 1959. He completed an internship in medicine at the University of Colorado in 1965 and a residency in psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine in 1968. Prior to beginning his practice in medicine, Dr. Haney served in the U.S. Navy on active duty at the Naval Submarine Base in New London from 1968 to 1970, and in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1970 to 1995.
Dr. Haney has been employed in his private practice in eastern Connecticut since 1970. He contributed 10 years at Natchaug Hospital in Mansfield as the medical director from 1997 to 2003 and as an attending psychiatrist between 1993 and 2003. Garnering a laudable reputation as the director of treatment from 1990 to 1992, Dr. Haney likewise worked as the director of staff growth and development from 1986 to 1992 at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. Further, he maintained activity as a psychiatrist at the University of Connecticut from 1970 to 1986 and was the chief of psychiatry at the United States Naval Submarine Base Hospital in Groton from 1968 to 1970. Likewise, Dr. Haney was also a consultant psychiatrist at the Youth Service Bureau in Mansfield from 1972 to 1993 and served as an associate professor at the University of Connecticut's Farmington campus.
Dr. Haney became involved in his profession because he did not wish to work in a laboratory for the rest of his career, wishing to pursue something that allowed him to work with people every day. Psychiatry and medicine was the perfect fit and the correct formula for his life path. The highlights of his career were being recognized for 45 years with Perception Program, of which he is the medical director and chairman of the board of directors. Additionally, Dr. Haney takes great pride in his lifetime membership in the Experimental Aircraft Association. He is also a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the American Medical Association, and the American Group Psychotherapy Association.
