Dr. Bucy was renowned as an aerospace engineering and mathematics educator with more than 35 years of excellence in his discipline. He had initially pursued an education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. Dr. Bucy subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics and statistics from the University of California Berkeley in 1963.
From 1960 to 1961, Dr. Bucy began his career as a researcher in mathematics at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies in Towson, MD. He worked as a research assistant at the University of California from 1961 to 1963 before returning to the Research Institute of Advanced Studies from 1963 to 1964. Dr. Bucy further flourished as an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland from 1964 to 1965 and an associate professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado from 1965 to 1966.
Dr. Bucy ultimately excelled as a professor of mathematics and aerospace engineering at the University of Southern California for the remainder of his career. He was also visiting professor at the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France; the Techinische Universitat in Berlin, West Germany; and University of Nice (LASSY), Nice, France.
With the mentoring of Rudy Kalman, Dr. Bucy contributed to the Kalman-Bucy filter. This mathematical filter is used in navigational and guidance systems, radar tracking, sonar ranging, and satellite orbit determination. In fact, it proved essential to the success of the early space programs of Ranger, Mariner, and Apollo missions. Today it is still used in many tracking and data position tasks including the Global Positioning System, Satellite tracking, Seismology and Weather prediction.
Dr. Bucy authored countless books and papers. Including "Filtering for Stochastic Processes in 1968 and "Lectures on Discrete Filtering Theory in 1994. Formerly, Dr. Bucy found success as the editor of the Journal of Information Sciences and the founding editor of Stochastics.
