A celebrated figure in his professional field, Dr. Aurilio retired as a senior member of mechanical engineering at Visidyne Inc. in Burlington, MA, after more than 25 years with the organization. A broad-based research and development company that specializes in EO sensor hardware and software, he was originally hired by Visidyne in 1976 as a senior mechanical engineer, a role he held for 10 years. Dr. Aurilio previously served at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University-Smithsonian Institute in Cambridge, MA, where he was a project engineer. He was also Vice President of FOI Medical Instruments, Inc. in 1970.

Dr. Aurilio also held various posts with several other organizations in the area, including Thermo-Electron Corporation and Symbion Corporate. Prior to these appointments, he was afforded the opportunity to be employed by Nobel Prize winner Ricardo Giacconi, an Italian-American astrophysicist renowned for laying the foundations of x-ray astronomy. Born in Casale di Carinola, Caserta, Italy, Dr. Aurilio graduated from the University of Naples with a Doctor of Mechanical Engineering in 1956, after which time he relocated to the United States.

Widely recognized for his work, Dr. Aurilio was responsible for the development of rocket instrumentation for infrared detection, as well as several medical instruments, including soft x-ray detection instruments and stratospheric balloon gondolas and instruments. He notably contributed his wealth of knowledge to the development of the CHANDRA Xray satellite, the OSO satellite and the MSX secret satellite, as well as several rockets and stratospheric balloon payloads, lidars and radar antennas. Additionally, Dr. Aurilio holds several patents in his field. He developed a compact spirometer (spirostat), which helped patients sick in bed and a spirocare for apnea. Both were derived from a patent in his name.

To remain aware of the latest developments in his field, Dr. Aurilio was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Ordine Ingegneri d'Italia Number 135 Caserta, Professional Engineers of Massachusetts, and the American Society for Metals. He remains a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Sons of Italy.
