Notably inducted into the Roosevelt High School Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and as a member of the Michigan State University National Championship Team in 1955. Bufe drew considerable influence from his love of sports and aptitude for coaching. Interested in working with people, he was advised in college to make a choice between law enforcement and athletic coaching, and subsequently chose criminal justice for his professional area due to the field's potential longevity. Dr. Bufe's many relevant experiences include working for George Romney, the former governor of Michigan, and as the first director of the law enforcement training program implementing the first state-wide police training program.
Dr. Bufe began as an executive trainee of security investigation at J. L. Hudson Co. in 1956, advancing to become an office manager for the same company in 1960. He subsequently accepted a position as a research investigator at Wayne State University in 1962, an administrative assistant to the secretary board of police commissioners for the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department in 1964 and as a management consultant for the highway safety division for the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Washington in 1964. Dr. Bufe has also served as the executive director of the Office of highway safety planning for the Michigan Governor's Highway Safety Representatives, as a deputy administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the Ford Administration, an administrator at the office of criminal justice programs at the Michigan Department of Management and Budget and as the Director of the Traffic Institute at Northwestern University from 1978 to 1999 and Chairman of the Board of the National Safety Council from 1998 to 2002.
Dr. Bufe earned a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in 1956. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Science in criminal justice in 1971 and a Doctor of Education in 1974. In addition to his other achievements, he was accepted into the Distinguished Graduates Hall of Fame in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1993. Maintaining his interpersonal investment in athletics, Dr. Bufe is interested in both professional and college sports. He also enjoys such avocations as family, golfing and boating.
