Dr. Albert Joseph Turner Jr was honored with the Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award from ABET.

An accomplished listee, Dr. Turner celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Having garnered a laudable reputation as a professor of computer science, Dr. Turner retired from Clemson University after 25 wonderful years. During his illustrious career in academia, he served as the founding head of the computer science department between 1978 and 1992. After retiring from the university in 2000, he traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he contributed another three years as a professor, then as the dean of information systems at Zayed University. Dr. Turner also taught mathematics at West Georgia College for six years before beginning graduate study for his PhD.

Dr. Turner has provided his expertise as a consultant for tertiary-level computing programs and served on the editorial boards for three academic journals. He also was founding chairman of the Seoul Accord, a non-governmental organization established to improve computing education worldwide by way of recognized academic computing programs. The accord is open to organizations that accredit university-level computing programs and whose organization and procedures comply with the standards of the accord.

Dr. Turner attended Georgia Institute of Technology, where he acquired both a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1961 and a Master of Science in mathematics in 1966. Before working toward his master's degree, he served to the rank of a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army between 1961 and 1962. He subsequently pursued additional studies, attending the University of Maryland, where he completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in computer science in 1972 and 1976, respectively. In 1960, Dr. Turner spent a summer completing an internship at IBM, which was when he initially became intrigued by computers. During his time teaching at West Georgia College, he worked part-time at the college's computer center before ultimately deciding to pursue his own graduate studies in computer science.

Aligned as a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Dr. Turner chaired the education board from 1988 to 1992, was treasurer between 1992 and 1998 and vice-president from 1998 until 2000. He was also prolifically active with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Inc. (ABET) where he excelled on various committees and was named a fellow in 2007. Additionally, Dr. Turner is past president of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board, which is now a participating body of ABET, and a former vice president of the International Federation for Information Processing, an international confederation of organizations in the field of information and communications technologies and sciences.

Recognized for his accomplishments, Dr. Turner received an ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education Award for Lifetime Service in 2002. He was later honored with the Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award from ABET in 2011, which is the highest accolade given by the accrediting body for university STEM programs. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Turner has been included in the first edition of Who's Who in the Media and Communication and the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
