Dr. Frey is renowned as a professor emeritus of biology and biophysics with more than 45 years of distinction in his field. Fascinated by science since childhood, he initially pursued an education at the Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1970. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at the University of California Los Angeles in 1975. However, Dr. Frey considers his oldest brother, Perry, to have been his main inspiration and role model for a career in science.

From 1975 to 1977, Dr. Frey began his career as a Wissenschaftliche assistant at the Biozentrum der Universitat in Basel, Switzerland. He worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the department of anatomy at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, during the 1977 to 1978 academic year. Furthermore, Dr. Frey flourished as a research assistant professor in the department of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1984 and at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1984 to 1986.

Following this time, Dr. Frey accepted the post of an associate professor of biology at San Diego State University in 1986. He later served the aforementioned university as a professor from 1988 to 2016, the associate chair of the department of biology from 1996 to 2001, and the chair of the department from 2005 to 2011 before attaining professor emeritus status in 2016. A member of the American Society for Cell Biology and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dr. Frey's research has primarily focused on mitochondrial structure, and he has been published in more than 30 professional journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
