Ms. Elson is renowned for her volunteering efforts and community advocacy, with more than five decades of service to organizations dedicated to education and the arts. Initially completing coursework at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, now known as Randolph College, in Lynchburg, Virginia, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta in 1959. Ms. Elson is especially proud of her involvement in higher education, as she passionately believes in the importance and value of education. She was a member of the Board of Regents and the University System of Georgia from 1993 to 1997.
She joined her family's business, a popular retail gift shop chain named Elson's, where she flourished as the vice president of marketing from 1979 to 1986. Additionally active as the president of the National Mental Health Association, now designated as Mental Health America, between 1980 and 1982, Ms. Elson served as a trustee of Randolph-Macon Woman's College from 1988 to 1998 and was granted emeritus status in 1999. She remains an honorary trustee of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
In other career-related endeavors, Ms. Elson has contributed as the past chairwoman of the American Craft Council, as well as a former trustee of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the American Federation of Arts in New York. Honored as a visionary by the Museum of Arts and Design in 1996 for her significant contributions, she was the recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award from Randolph-Macon Women's College in 1987 and a Women of Distinction Award from Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2014. A celebrated member of The Society of the Four Arts, for which she served as chairman from 2017 to 2019, Ms. Elson was also presented with the YWCA Greater Atlanta Academy of Women Achievers Award in 1986. Likewise, she has been selected for inclusion in multiple volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the World.
