Subsequently, he was admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of the United States, United States Court of Appeals for the Third, Fifth and Tenth Circuits, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, and the Districts of Arizona and Colorado. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Barnett has been affiliated with the Center for American and International Law, the American College of Trial Lawyers, the Academy of American Legal Writers, the Dallas, Houston and American Bar Foundations, and the American Association for Justice, among others.

Dedicated to his community and the legal field as a whole, Mr. Barnett is additionally active as an advisory board member for the Institute for Energy Law, a trustee with the Center for American and International Law, and as a former director of Lyceum. Throughout his career, he has been celebrated many times, having been recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer in business and antitrust litigation, class action/mass torts, and energy and natural resources between 2003 and 2019.
