Specializing in internal medicine, immunology and rheumatology, Dr. Owen has garnered a laudable reputation as a teacher, medical inventor consultant and practitioner in Richmond, Virginia. Active in his profession for more than 50 years, he notably served as a director at several rheumatology clinics and for the residency training at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital and UNC Hospitals. An equally talented medical educator, Dr. Owen began his career in academia with the Medical College of Virginia in 1966 as an instructor of medicine. He later became a full professor and was named as a Taliaferro/Scott distinguished professor of internal medicine, prior to his recognition as a professor emeritus in 2000.

Providing his medical expertise to various organizations and committees, Dr. Owen found success as a medical advisor for the Social Security Administration at the Department of Health and Human Services between 1967 and 2004. He maintained involvement as a consultant to the McGuire VA Hospital from 1966 until 2000, and chaired the medical advisory committee for the Richmond branch of the Arthritis Foundation. Dr. Owen was likewise a producer for the Good Morning Virginia television show "Update in Medicine" and the Virginia Educational television show "Your Health TV Series."

Renowned for his work, Dr. Owen earned distinction for developing techniques for performing arthrocenteses. Also known as joint aspirations, the procedure includes using a syringe to collect synovial fluid from a joint capsule. Dr. Owen further developed a cellophane tape polarizing microscopic compensator for identifying crystals in joint fluid and a wire adapter for an electrocardiogram for the removal of pericardial fluid.

Aligned with multiple professional organizations, including the Richmond Society of Internal Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia and the American Medical Association where he served in a variety of capacities, Dr. Owen is also a fellow and 1997 Laureate Award recipient of the American College of Physicians. He is a member, past president, former chairman of the board and former parliamentarian of the Richmond Academy of Medicine. Dr. Owen has contributed to the medical field by authoring and co-authoring numerous articles in medical and scientific journals. He also distinguished himself as the associate editor of Virginia Medical from 1978 to 1998 and was an editorial reviewer for such publications as the Journal of the American Medical Association from 1979 until 2000, Arthritis Rheumatism between 1981 and 2004 and the Journal of Rheumatology from 1984 to 2000.

Heavily involved in his church, Dr. Owen has served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Richmond since 1978, where he was once a member of the usher's guild, chairperson of the diaconate. He has also provided his time and expertise in his community as the co-chairman of physicians for the statewide capital funds campaign at Virginia Commonwealth University, on the board of directors of the Richmond Area Health Care Coalition, and a board member of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Virginia. Among other roles, Dr. Owen excelled on the board of directors of Mooreland Farms Association and the Metropolitan Richmond Chambers of Commerce and as a member of the Virginia Museum and Richmond Symphony.

Dr. Owen attended the University of North Carolina, where he received a Bachelor of Science in medicine in 1957 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1960. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at the Medical College of Virginia, a residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital and the Medical College of Virginia and a National Institutes of Health fellowship in rheumatic diseases at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Owen also served in the U.S. Army abroad in Korea and Fort Bragg as a medical officer and post surgeon between 1962 and 1964. Eminently qualified in his field, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, where he served as the chief proctor from 1975 to 1997.

In recognition of his service to the military, Dr. Own was decorated with an Army Commendation Medal. For his work in medicine, he received a Distinguished Service Award from the Arthritis Foundation in 1971, a Gerard B. Lambert Award for the years of 1974 and 1975 and a Distinguished Service Award from the University North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1999. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Owen has been cited in approximately 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
