Dr. Romas, a professor emeritus of urology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, joined the department of urology as a full-time faculty member in 2014. An expert in his field, whose clinical focus includes adult general urologic care, stone disease and urological oncology. He formerly served as the chairman of urology at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital for three decades, from 1984 to 2014. Dr. Romas is currently affiliated with New York-Presbyterian and Columbia.
During his illustrious career, Dr. Romas conducted extensive research in the role of prostate acid phosphates in different stages of prostate cancer. Notably, he was responsible for developing an antibody to mark the presence of a tumor in a patient's body after doctors experienced trouble identifying a tumor marker for prostate cancer, which was prostatic-acid-phosphatase. As a result of his years of research, Dr. Romas has contributed numerous articles in scientific publications and was the editor for Prostate Acid Phosphatase Measurement.
Dr. Romas studied at Colgate University where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. Accepted to Columbia University shortly thereafter, he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1962. Additional educational pursuits include an internship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center, as well as a residency and fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Romas also served for two years in the U.S. Air Force as a major after residency between 1968 and 1970. He earned board certification as a urologist in 1974.
To remain aware in his field, Dr. Romas is a member of the research, finance and publication committee and a past president of the New York section of the Urological Association. He is also a member of the Hellenic Medical Society and an advisory committee member of the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Romas has been honored with numerous awards throughout his prestigious career, including an American Chemical Society Prize in Chemistry, a Research Award from the American Urological Association and a Pfizer Scholar Urology Award. He has been named to several medical publications as well, including Best Doctors in New York by New York Magazine and Castle Connolly's Best Doctors in the New York Metro Area.
