Joseph M. Garbely, D.O., DFASAM, has been recognized as one of America's Most Influential Psychiatrists by the International Association of Who's Who

Dr. Joseph M. Garbely, D.O., DFASAM, of Royersford, PA, is honored as one of America's Most Influential Psychiatrists for his extensive contributions as a Chief Medical Officer, Executive VP, and Psychiatrist in the field of Addition Medicine.



    ROYERSFORD, PA, May 29, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Garbely's path to becoming a revered medical professional began at St. Joseph's University where he completed his Undergraduate Degree in Biology. Following on from this he received his Osteopathic Medical Degree from the well-renowned Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Garbely then strengthened his skills and knowledge further by completing his Internal Medicine Residency at Abington Memorial Hospital and he also completed a Psychiatric Residency at Temple University School of Medicine. All of these qualifications have well-equipped Dr. Garbely for his medical career. His ability has been recognized by his many Board Certifications including by the American Board of Internal Medicine (1994), the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (2004 with recertification in 2014), the American Board of Addiction Medicine (2008, however the board is now defunct) and most recently by the American Board of Preventative Medicine in Addiction Medicine (2019).

To date, Dr. Garbely's career has spanned almost thirty years and he is still contributing extensively to his field. Throughout his career he has been able to refine his expertise in a variety of areas including clinical practice, co-occurring issues, treatment innovation, research, detoxification, mental health, heroin, prescription drug addiction, and medication-assisted treatment.

Dr. Garbely is probably most well-known for his work at Caron Treatment Centers where he has worked for the past eight years. Caron is a not-for-profit organization that has been dedicated to its pioneering work in addiction, behavioral healthcare, and research for more than sixty years. Caron helps individuals of all ages in the areas of addiction medicine education, research, treatment, and prevention. Caron serves a wide geographical area including Atlanta, Philadelphia, Florida, New England, New York City, Washington D.C. and Palm Beach County.

Dr. Garbely's role at Caron involves overseeing a variety of different programs and departments including the Neurocognitive Services Department, Healthcare Professionals Program, Psychology, Detoxification, Chronic Pain Program, Medical Management, and Research. One of the most prominent achievements of Dr. Garbely at Caron Pennsylvania was the establishment of the Resident and Medical Student Training Program to teach physicians in addiction medicine to a high standard. Furthermore, Dr. Garbely played a prominent role in creating an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited to the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program at Caron Pennsylvania and Reading Hospital thereby strengthening its prowess.

As part of his role as the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Director, Dr. Garbely is an active member of the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine which allows him to keep up to date with new developments and share his knowledge with other esteemed professionals.

Dr. Garbely is also proud to hold additional positions at other respected organizations. For example, he is part of the medical staff at Reading Hospital. He also holds positions in further education including being a Clinical Associate Professor at Penn State College of Medicine and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Stony Brook Renaissance School of Medicine.

Dr. Garbely is keen to remain at the forefront of innovation, so he is an active part of many professional bodies. Dr. Garbely is a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and is the Chairman of the Physician in Training Committee, ex-officio member of the board.

Dr. Garbely has been recognized on a local and national level for his prestige in the medical profession. Dr. Garbely has received awards from a variety of organizations including the Helen Ruske, M.D. Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching by the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Garbely is proud to have been mentored by Dr. David Gary Smith, M.D., and Dr. David Baron, D.O., and dedicates his recognition to them.

Outside of the workplace, Dr. Garbely is also widely recognized as a dedicated humanitarian and gives back to the community through his work with St. Teresa of Calcutta Church.
