She initially pursued an education at Rollins College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Social Work at Fordham University in 1965. Board certified in clinical social work, Ms. Coder Matthews is additionally licensed as a clinical social worker in the state of Connecticut. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
Between 1962 to 1964, Ms. Coder Matthews completed a social work field placement with the Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children in New York. She further flourished in the obstetrics unit of Saint Luke's Women's Hospital from 1965 to 1966 and as a senior social worker in the surgical, ENT and orthopedic units of the Lenox Hill Hospital from 1966 to 1970. In 1970, Ms. Coder Matthews accepted the position of the director of social services at the Silver Hill Foundation in New Canaan, CT, which she held until 1977.
A member of the faculty at the University of Connecticut's Graduate School of Social Work from 1975 to 1976, Ms. Coder Matthews was additionally active as the director of social services at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, FL, from 1980 to 1984. She has excelled as the director of social services at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, FL, from 1984 to 1987. She maintains an active private practice that serves the public community throughout the United States.
