An expert in her field, she earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Punjab and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from King Edward Medical University. Subsequently, she became certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Akbar retains her professional alignment with the Memphis Medical Society, the Tennessee Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology in order to remain aware of changes in the field.
With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Akbar has contributed her wealth of knowledge to numerous articles on important public health issues, poster presentations and oral presentations, including "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Infection Mimicking as Pulmonary Tuberculosis in an Inmate," "COVID-19 and United States Prison Population" and "Effects of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Blockade in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease." In recognition of her outstanding body of work and academic excellence, she accepted a presidential academic merit scholarship due to placing first nationally on her medical college's admissions test in 2006. Ten years later, she was presented with the James R. Givens Award from the Endocrinology Division of the University of Tennessee's Health Sciences Center. In the coming years, Dr. Akbar intends to continue serving her patients and students to the best of her ability with emphasis on advancing medical science through research.
