Prior to these appointments, he worked as a resident and the chief resident in ophthalmology at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit in 1995. Dr. Swarup began his career as an intern at the MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Swarup pursued an education at Howard University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1987, and graduating from the College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine in 1991. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Swarup became certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Beyond his primary responsibilities in the field, Dr. Swarup has participated in numerous endeavors within his professional circles. Prolific as a public speaker at various medical conferences, he has found success with his written works as well, notably co-authoring "Cardiovascular Surgery in Blacks" in the November 1990 edition of Cardiovascular Clinics. Dr. Swarup remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the India Heritage Foundation, the Hampton Road Hindu Temple and the Suman Swarup Foundation, for which he was the founder. Dr. Swarup is a Diplomat for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Swarup has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Accepting a fellowship from the James F. Mitchell Foundation for Medical Education, he was further recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was also honored with Second Placement at the 1990 editions of the Howard University Medical Student Research Competition and the Ophthalmology Resident's Day Symposium at Howard University Hospital. Likewise, Dr. Swarup was selected for Third Placement at the American Medical Association's Eastern Student Research Forum.
Inherently interested in a career in medicine, Dr. Swarup decided to focus on ophthalmology professionally after realizing he could greatly help others by improving and repairing their sight. He attributes his success to hard work, commitment and his extremely high standards for patient care. Looking toward the future, Dr. Swarup hopes to continue garnering valuable experience through the AECPEC while providing patients with the best quality care possible and fostering the medical talents of his son, whom he hopes will one day take over the practice.
