Having accrued well over 25 years of inimitable expertise in his field, Mr. Mercer retired from his position as a marketing executive with the Xerox Corporation in 1987. During his extensive career with the organization, he worked throughout the country from Texas and New York to Illinois and Connecticut and abroad in Canada. Hired in 1961 as a sales representative, he later advanced to the role of a regional sales manager, regional vice president and, ultimately, the president and chief executive officer. Following his departure from Xerox, Mr. Mercer was subsequently acquired by Wilson Foods Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Doskocil Companies Inc., a leading manufacturer and distributor of processed meat products in the U.S., in 1988. Initially serving as the chairperson and chief executive officer, he transitioned to the role of the president and chief operating officer between 1989 and 1991.
Just prior to retiring from the marketing industry, Mr. Mercer co-founded Mercer-Adams Funeral Service in Bethany, Oklahoma, in 1989. Joining partner Gene Adams, who had been in the business for more than four decades, the two collaborated for nearly a decade until Gene's retirement in 1997. Continuing the long tradition of excellence as the sole owner, Mr. Mercer and his caring staff members handle everything from arrangements to grief counseling services.
A dedicated civic advocate, Mr. Mercer has found success on the board of directors of his alma mater, Southern Nazarene University, and the International Church of Nazarene in Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Mercer is also involved as a parishioner at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and he spent more than 10 years as chairman of the finance committee of the Church of the Nazarene.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Mercer attended Southern Nazarene University where he attained a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1970. He also completed a Program for Management Development certification at Harvard University in 1973. To remain aware of developments affecting his area of expertise, Mr. Mercer has maintained his professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations, among which he is a member of the Oklahoma City Rotary Club 29. Among his avocational interests, he is active with the Men's Dinner Club in Oklahoma City. In 1989, Mr. Mercer was recognized with an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Southern Nazarene University.
