John Popovich Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Foreign Service

Mr. Popovich retired from the United States Agency for International Development after more than 30 years of exemplary service

CARY, NC, August 17, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John Popovich has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Growing up in California, Mr. Popovich had several school friends of Asian descent. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, he listened to his friends' parents tell stories of their youth in their various countries of origin. These experiences cemented Mr. Popovich's decision to pursue a career in history early in his life so that he could expand his mind and travel the world.

In 1952, Mr. Popovich enlisted the U.S. Army due to the training opportunities available. He was selected to attend the Army Language School in Monterey, California and studied Russian for a little under a year. Once he completed his studies, Mr. Popovich found himself in Tokyo, Japan as the Korean War was coming to a close.

For the following two years, Mr. Popovich dedicated his time to a number of efforts in Kyoto, the country's original capital, and the historical and cultural center of Japan, which reaffirmed his desire to witness all of the wonders the world had to offer. Upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he enrolled at the University of San Francisco, from which obtained a Bachelor of Science in history in 1958. Following his graduation, Mr. Popovich provided his resume to every building in the financial district of San Francisco.

Although he didn't receive any calls for a while, which was disheartening, Mr. Popovich was eventually approached by the General Steamship Corporation, with which he prepared ship manifests for outgoing cargo. While with the company, he encountered an older man who was originally from China who encouraged him to follow his dreams. Following his work with the General Steamship Corporation, Mr. Popovich pursued a position with ICA through which he traveled to Phnom Penh, Cambodia and worked as a records management clerk, earning just $2,000 a year.

For more than 30 years thereafter, Mr. Popovich accepted roles of increasing responsibility in the field of administration management with assignments in Vietnam, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Yemen, Panama and Egypt. He also served as Division Chief for Overseas Personnel responsible for worldwide assignments and promotions. In 1993, he retired as an assistant inspector general for resource management in the Office of the Inspector General of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the rank of a minister counselor in senior foreign service. Though retired, Mr. Popovich continued his activity as a contractor with USAID for short assignments over the next ten years, during which time he traveled to such countries as Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania, Cambodia, Ukraine, Vietnam and Hungary.

Although his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Popovich is especially proud of his accomplishments throughout his career. Looking toward the future, Mr. Popovich intends to enjoy his well-deserved retirement and encourages young people to apply for a position in the diplomatic foreign service and to enjoy an exciting career and have unique chances to see the world for themselves.
