enCompass Solutions Group to take DP World Vancouver to the Leading Edge of Intermodal Operations

Global trade enabler, DP World, continues to invest in modernization and takes intermodal yard operations to the next level at its terminal in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Joel Werner, Director, Engineering & Projects at DP World Canada states, "CEP will increase terminal capacity by 70% with only a 15% increase to the terminal footprint."

VANCOUVER, BC, September 03, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- enCompass Solutions Group is pleased to announce it has been awarded the design, supply, and implementation of the advanced collision avoidance and personnel detection system in the new Intermodal Yard (IY) of DP World Vancouver (DPWV). This IY modernization is a key component to DP World Vancouver's Centerm Expansion Project (CEP). enCompass Solutions Group will be collaborating with key project stakeholders to deliver one of the most advanced intermodal operations in North America. ZPMC will be supplying the Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes. RMG control and drive systems will be provided by TMEIC. The advanced Real-Time Location System (RTLS), designed to identify personnel and equipment in the IY, will be supplied by Yardeye GMBH. Integration, installation, and system visualization is proudly being performed by enCompass Solutions Group.

DP World is one of the largest ports and terminal operators in the world with over 82 terminals and 56,000 employees. DP World Vancouver is one of three primary container terminals in the Vancouver gateway and handles approximately one-fifth of the goods shipped in containers through the Port of Vancouver. The expansion of this terminal is expected to be substantially complete in late 2021 and will expand the terminal's design capacity to 1.5 million TEUs per year, an increase of two-thirds of its current capacity.

The principal goal of the RTLS will be the protection of people and equipment during full operation of DP World Vancouver's remotely operated IY, ensuring a suspended load never travels overhead of personnel or equipment within the IY and ensuring only authorized personnel can access and operate within the IY.

Joel Werner, Director, Engineering & Projects at DP World Canada states, "CEP will increase terminal capacity by 70% with only a 15% increase to the terminal footprint. This is an ambitious goal, and the Yardeye RTLS technology is critical to realizing the required operational efficiencies while meeting DP World's commitment to the safety of all personnel working on the terminal."

The Yardeye RTLS will provide a dynamic Collision Avoidance System (CAS) for personnel, ITVs, and RMG cranes, and to increase IY efficiency it will provide precise railcar positioning for accurate Terminal Operating System (TOS) functionality. The IY RTLS will consist of three (3) subsystems:

• Equipment Location System (ELS): based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (D-GNSS), providing Collision Avoidance System (CAS) for vehicles (ITVs) and RMG cranes.

• Personnel Location System CAS (PLS) and Access Validation System: based on advanced Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), providing Collision Avoidance System (CAS) for workers and authorized visitors within the IY.

• Rail Car Location System (RCLS): based on Time of Flight (TOF) laser technology, providing railcar position within the IY and communicating with TOS and RMGs.

All data will be collected and processed at the core of the system and will continuously communicate and log live location and identification data to the enCompass Solutions Group Yard Controller.

"We consider it a privilege to have been selected for this high-profile and leading-edge project and are committed to delivering success for DP World Vancouver," said Mr. Adam Knipfel, Vice President, Sales & Marketing of enCompass Solutions Group.
