Shirley Neilsen Blum, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Academia

    PETALUMA, CA, September 04, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Shirley Neilsen Blum, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing inspiration from a professor at the University of the Pacific Dr. Blum has long pursued her love for the arts. Specializing in Renaissance and modern art, she served as an instructor at the University of Chicago, an associate professor at the University of California at Riverside, and as a visiting professor with Bryn Mawr College. During the l970's she founded the Art History Department at the State University of New York at Purchase, from which she retired in 1989. Over the years, Dr. Blum honed her expertise in Northern Renaissance and modern art. In a career filled with highlights, she is especially proud of publishing her latest book on the Renaissance and the Distinguished Teaching Award she received from the University of California.

In the early 1950s, Dr. Blum earned an Associate of Arts from Stockton College. From there, she received a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago in 1955 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Netherlandish art through the University of California at Los Angeles in 1964. Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Blum maintained her affiliation with the College Art Association in order to remain aware of changes in the field and contributed to a number of publications including "A Study of Fifteenth Century Netherlandish Triptychs," "Early Netherlandish Triptychs: A Study in patronage," "Henri Matisse: Rooms with a View," and "The New Art of the Fifteenth Century: Faith and Art in Florence and the Netherlands."

In recognition of her outstanding work, Dr. Blum received a senior fellowship through the National Endowment for the Humanities, a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and a nomination for Distinguished University Professor through the SUNY system. She held the Charles A. Dana Chair at Colgate University. She did the voiceover in the documentary film "The Cool School" about the seminal Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, which she co-founded in 1957 with Walter Hopps and Edward Kienholz. Dr. Blum, now retired as Professor Emeritus, continues her research.
