Dr. Zaroukian has distinguished himself as a primary care physician for nearly four decades, first as a professor of medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and subsequently on behalf of Sparrow Health System. In 2011, he became Sparrow's vice president and chief medical information officer, adding the title of chief transformation officer in 2017. Among his many responsibilities, he notably provides direction for the electronic health record system and how it can be utilized for transformation. Dr. Zaroukian was also bestowed with the title of professor emeritus of medicine at Michigan State University (MSU) in the College of Human Medicine, where he was chief medical informatics officer on the East Lansing campus from 2005 to 2011.

A seasoned researcher, Dr. Zaroukian has published extensively, contributing multiple articles to scholarly journals, as well as chapters to medical books. He has also been a frequent speaker at local, national and international conferences on such topics as health information technology and administration. Most prominently, Dr. Zaroukian spoke as an invited panelist at the White House in 2012 on ways to advance health information technology to improve health care quality and value.

Dr. Zaroukian received a Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan in 1976, followed by a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in immunology at MSU in 1980 and 1984, respectively. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include serving as chief resident in Internal Medicine at MSU from 1985 to 1986. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Zaroukian is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Clinical Informatics).

To support his exemplary career, Dr. Zaroukian has been active as member and chair of the enterprise board of directors of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), as well as board member and chair of HIMSS North America. He is also a former member of the society's enterprise information systems committee, as well as a former chairperson of its ambulatory information systems committee. Dr. Zaroukian is also a recognized HIMSS fellow. He also served on the board of trustees of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), the board of advisors of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS), director of the Michigan State University Internal Medicine Residency Program and councilor of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM). Dr. Zaroukian maintains involvement with HIMSS, the American College of Physicians (ACP), and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).

Among his many recognitions, Dr. Zaroukian received the MSU Teacher-Scholar Award early in his career in 1993, an award bestowed to the university's most promising and accomplished junior faculty members. He also received several other teaching awards, as well as service accolades, and in 2013 was presented with an Innovation Advocate Award from Healthcare Informatics and the AMDIS. The following year, Dr. Zaroukian was named Physician of the Year by Sparrow Health System, in recognition for his contributions to establishing a large, enterprise-wide, advanced electronic health records system. More recently, he received several HIMSS Awards, including the Physician IT Leadership Award in 2010, the North America Board of Directors Service Award in 2018 and the Enterprise Board of Directors Service Award in 2019. He also was recognized by AMIA with a Leadership Award in 2015. He has been honored repeatedly by the ACP, including a Laureate award, a Volunteerism and Community Service Award, and most prominently being named Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP).
