Maurice F. Curran has been Inducted into the Marquis Who's Who Registry

Mr. Curran is a retired attorney best-known for his appellate work on the landmark Supreme Court case Fisher v. Vassar College

BRONXVILLE, NY, October 20, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Maurice F. Curran has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Curran is a retired attorney celebrating six decades of practice specializing as corporate and litigation counsel. He graduated from Saint Joseph's College and Seminary in 1952 with an excellent academic record and received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve (USMC) during the height of the Korean War. He served in active duty as the Public Information Officer for the 4th Marine Regiment stationed in Nara, Japan. He served with the 1st Marine Regiment as a Reinforced Rifle Platoon Commander in the demilitarized zone outside Tambang Dong, South Korea, until 1955. After release from active duty in the Marine Corps, he remained a captain in the USMC Reserve until 1958. While serving in Korea, Mr. Curran devoted extensive thought to what his next step would be after discharge from active service in the military. After completing his active duty in Korea, he enrolled in law school.

In 1958 Mr. Curran earned a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Fordham University, and was admitted to practice by the State Bar of New York. He began his career as an associate in the New York City firm of Kelley, Drye, Newhall & Maginnes, where he would practice until 1960. He further worked until 1965 as an associate with Wilson & Bave, before transitioning to corporate counsel and litigation practice. Mr. Curran would serve as Division Counsel for Merck & Co. pharmaceuticals, and as Assistant General Counsel for E.R. Squibb & Sons Inc., from 1968 to 1970. He served as a legal advisor to the Yonkers Board of Education. In 1970 he was named the chief of the law department and Corporation Counsel for the City of Yonkers.

Mr. Curran re-entered private practice in 1972 as a litigation partner with Bleakley, Platt, Schmidt & Fritz, White Plains, NY, practicing with the firm until 1983. In 1983, he became a partner with Banks, Curran & Schwam, Mount Kisco, NY, remaining active until 2005 and with the firm as of counsel until 2018. It was with Banks, Curran, & Schwam that Mr. Curran litigated and argued his most notable case, a 1998 appellate defense of Vassar College in a sex discrimination suit that had previously ruled in favor of the plaintiff in the U.S. District Court, Southern District, New York. The Second Circuit Court in New York, sitting en banc, ruled in favor of Vassar College.

Mr. Curran's defense resulted in the overturn of a million-dollar ruling in favor of the plaintiff and the establishment of a strong precedent in favor of colleges and institutions in accusations of simple sex discrimination. While in practice, he was an active member of the New York City Bar Association and the Federal Bar Council, and served as a trustee of the Westchester Community College, New York. In his retirement, Mr. Curran looks forward to spending time with family and friends, and devoting time to home improvement projects, gardening and yard work.
