Drawing upon 50 years of expertise in clinical research, biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology and drug discovery, Dr. Van Kampen excels as the chief executive officer of The Van Kampen Group, which assists other companies in research and liaisons with government and industry regarding licensing products for commercial use. In addition to his executive role with The Van Kampen Group, he consults with Altimmune on the development of new vaccines and is a member of the Board of Directors for TNG Pharma which is developing a vaccine for cattle against the toxic effects of the saliva of the horn fly.
Previously, Dr. Van Kampen worked as chief operating officer and chief executive officer of Vaxin, Inc. where the company addressed research and development of non-invasive adenovirus vectored vaccines including intranasal vaccine for the seasonal flu, anthrax, and pandemic influenza. He helped acquire more than $8 million in non-dilutive funding to support this research and development. Between 1986 and 1991, he supervised the construction of a new $4 million laboratory for Virogenetics in Rensselaer, New York. Early in his career, he was a veterinary pathologist for the US Department of Agriculture, helped establish one of the first private veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the USA, and was a Department Head at Utah State University.
Before embarking on his professional journey, in 1961, Dr. Van Kampen earned a Bachelor degree in Veterinary Science from Utah State University, in 1964, a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University, and in 1967, a Doctorate of Philosophy in Comparative Pathology from the University of California at Davis in 1967. Nearly 30 years later, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Utah State University. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and past President of the Utah Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Van Kampen has frequently spoken at national and international conferences. Alongside other scholars, he has authored technical articles such as "Toward the development of vectored vaccines in compliance with evolutionary medicine'" "Protective avian influenza in vivo vaccination with non- replicating human adenovirus vector", and "Safety and immunogenicity of adenovirus-vectored nasal and epicutaneous influenza vaccines in humans". He is also a co-editor of the book "Effects of Poisonous Plants on Livestock".
In his community work, he has served as a Board Member of the Medtronic Foundation and President of the Birmingham Alabama Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At 84 years of age, Dr. Van Kampen aims to wind down his work in the coming years, seeking out successors so that he can comfortably retire.
