Dr. Wanebo is a surgical oncologist and educator with more than three decades of service to his patients and to advancing the body of knowledge in metastatic cancers. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Regis College and earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Colorado in 1961. Dr. Wanebo completed an internship and residency at the Weill Cornell Medicine Bellevue Hospital before pursuing a surgical residency at the University of California San Francisco in 1963. He was accepted to a prestigious two-year fellowship in tumor immunology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1965, and would return to the University of California for an additional surgical residency upon completion. Dr. Wanebo was a senior surgical fellow of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 1971 until 1973, when he began his career as an attending surgeon and clinical assistant.

In 1973, Dr. Wanebo became an instructor of surgery at Cornell University's Weill Medical College, rising to become an assistant professor of surgery from 1975 until 1977. He would remain active as an associate and assistant attending surgeon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center until 1977, whereupon he transitioned to a focus on research as an associate scientist and clinical immunology consultant at the Center. During the same year, Dr. Wanebo was named as the chief of the division of surgical oncology at the University of Virginia, and he would maintain his clinical practice while serving as a professor of surgery at the university until 1987.

Dr. Wanebo left the University of Virginia to become a professor of surgery and the director of surgical oncology at Brown University, where he continues to practice. In addition to his work with Brown University, he is a professor of surgery at the Boston University Medical School, where he has taught since 1998, and the director of surgical oncology at Landmark Medical Center, a private hospital in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Additionally, Dr. Wanebo is the founder of Chemo-Enhanced LLC, a Providence-based medical research company focusing on the development of cancer treatments. He has served as a member of the American Head and Neck Society's Advanced Training Council and a consultant for the National Institutes of Health Ad Hoc Study Session on Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Extensively published, Dr. Wanebo has contributed to numerous articles, books and scientific papers, and sits on the editorial board of Head and Neck, the Annals of Surgical Oncology, Surgical Clinics of North America and the Japanese journal Gastric Cancer, among others. Likewise, he wrote "Regional Therapy of Malignancy" in 2018. Dr. Wanebo has also edited more than half a dozen books on topics in oncology.

In recognition of his career contributions to oncology, Dr. Wanebo has been the recipient of a Special Award from the University of Colorado Medical School, a Bronze Star Commendation Medal with Device for his medical service during the Vietnam War and is the Endowed Chair of the Harold Wanebo Professorship of Surgical Oncology at the Roger Williams Medical Center. He attributes his success to the support of his wife, a nurse and the influence of numerous specialists and professional mentors throughout his career. As a part of his commitment to research, Dr. Wanebo is active in many professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
