Dr. McChesney is the founder and chief executive officer of Cloaked Therapeutics and Arbor Therapeutics, through which he has drawn on more than five decades of research in natural products chemistry to identify and develop novel cancer treatments. Inspired by a lifelong passion for nature and a fascination with the potential to address disease using naturally derived compounds, he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical technology at Iowa State University of Science and Technology in 1961. He continued his education at Indiana University, where he completed a Master of Arts in botany in 1964, and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry in 1965. Dr. McChesney developed an early reputation for academic excellence, earning an undergraduate scholarship from the Ford Motor Company Fund, and a National Science Foundation fellowship for his postgraduate study.
From 1965 until 1978, Dr. McChesney served as a faculty member at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, who presented him with an Outstanding Teaching Award for the 1967 to 1968 academic year. He accepted a faculty position at the University of Mississippi in 1978, rising to become the director of the school's Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1986. In 1995, Dr. McChesney established the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi's Oxford campus to advance and fund the study of natural compounds with commercial or therapeutic potential. He continues to teach and research at the University of Mississippi as an adjunct professor of biomolecular sciences.
Dr. McChesney entered the private sector in 1996 as the vice president of development at NaPro BioTherapeutics Inc., departing in 2003 to become the chief scientific officer for Tapestry Pharmaceuticals and ChromaDex Inc. In 2009, he established Ironstone Separations Inc., a consulting and research firm where he acted as the principal until 2017. Dr. McChesney is the founder of two pharmaceutical science ventures, Arbor Therapeutics and Cloaked Therapeutics, where he serves as the chief executive officer and managing director. A former Eli Lilly research fellow, he holds 45 patents in his field, including a third-generation taxane anticancer agent currently in clinical development, and an 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial with the potential to address hemolytic toxicity during malaria treatment.
Dr. McChesney is a former Fulbright lecturer, has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and scientific papers, and has been invited to present at the International Conference on the Science of Botanicals. He attributes his success to good fortune and hard work, and hopes to see some of his patented compounds gain approval and reach market readiness in the coming years. Dr. McChesney is a member of the American Chemical Society, and is a fellow of both the American Society of Pharmacognosy and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
